Bathroom Planning Guidelines

 
  1. Doorways should be at least 32" wide.
  2. Walkways should be at least 36" wide.
  3. Clear floor space at least the width of the door on the push side and a larger clear floor space on the pull side for maneuvering to open, close and pass through the doorway.
  4. Clear floor space of 30” x 48” either parallel or perpendicular should be provided at the lavatory.
  5. A clear floor space of 48” x 48” shall be provided in front of the toilet with 16” of that clear floor space extending to each side of the fixture’s ce12” of the 48” x 48” clear floor space can extend under the lavatory when total access to a knee space is provided.
  6. Clear floor space of 48” x 48” from the front of the bidet should be provided.
  7. A clear floor space of 60” wide x 30” deep shall be provided at the bathtub for a parallel approach of 60” wide x 48” deep.
  8. Clear floor space at a shower less than 60” wide should be 36” deep by shower width + 12”.  A shower 60” wide or greater requires a space of 36” deep by shower width.
  9. Clear floor spaces required at each fixture may overlap.
  10. Turning space of 180o, minimum diameter of 60” for 360o turns, or T-turn with a space of 36” x 36” x60”.
  11. Clear floor space of 30” x 48” is required beyond the door swing in the bathroom.
  12. For more than vanity, one may be 30” through 34” high and another at 34” through 42” high.
  13. Knee space provided at the lavatory, 27” above the floor at the front edge and 30” wide.
  14. The bottom edge of the mirror over the lavatory should be a maximum of 40” above the floor or a maximum of 48” above the floor if it is tilted.
  15. Clearance between two bowls in the lavatory center is 30”, Centerline to centerline.
  16. In an enclosed shower, the minimum usable interior dimensions are 34” x34” measured from wall to wall.
  17. Showers should include a bench or seat that is 17” to 19” above the floor and a minimum of 15” deep.
  18. A 60” deep shower requires a 32” wide entrance.  If the shower is 42” deep, a 36” wide entrance is required.
  19. Shower doors must open into the bathroom.
  20. No steps at the tub or shower area.  Safety rails should be installed to facilitate transfer.
  21. All showerheads equipped with a pressure balance/temperature regulator or temperature limiting device.
  22. Shower controls accessible from inside and outside the fixture and located between the tub rim and 33” above the floor, below the grab bar and offset toward the room.
  23. Provide a minimum of 16” clearance from the centerline of the toilet or bidet to any obstruction on For adjacent toilet and bidet installation, the 16” minimum centerline clearance to all obstructions should be maintained.
  24. The toilet paper holder installed within reach of person seated on the toilet, slightly in front of the edge of the toilet and centered 26” above the floor.
  25. Compartmental toilet areas should be a minimum of 36” x 66” with a swing-out door or pocket door.
  26. Walls reinforced to receive grab bars in the tub, shower and toilet areas.
  27. Storage for toiletries, linens, grooming and general bathroom supplies provided 15” to 48” above the floor.
  28. All flooring should be slip resistant.
  29. Exposed pipes and mechanicals covered by protective panel or shroud.
  30. Controls, dispensers, outlets etc… shall be located 15” to 48” above the floor and can be operated.
  31. Access panels to all mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems.
  32. Mechanical ventilation systems included to vent entire room.  Calculation for minimum size system:Minimum Cubic Feet Per Minute = Length x Width x Height x 8 Changes of Air per Hour.
  33. Ground fault circuit interrupters specified on all receptacles, light and switches.  All light fixtures above the tub/shower must be moisture-proof, special-purpose fixtures.
  34. Auxiliary heating may be planned in addition to the primary heat source.
  35. Every functional area should be well illuminated with task lighting, night lights and/or general lighting.  No light fixtures should be within reach of person seated or standing in tub or shower.
  36. Bathroom lighting should include a window/skylight with an area of at least 10% of the bathroom’s square footage.
  37. Controls, handles and door/drawer pulls should be operable with one hand, require minimal strength, and should not require a tight grasp, pinching or twisting of the wrist.
  38. Clipp and radius corners on open countertops to liminate sharp edges.
  39. Any glass in a tub/shower, partition or other glass application within 18” of the floor should be laminated glass with plastic interlayer, tempered glass or approved plastic.
